History Of Our Association

Olympic sports such as hockey, athletics, volleyball, football, and several others have a long-standing tradition in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Athletes from these islands have proudly represented India on the international stage, with participation beginning as early as 1984 in the Asian Games—particularly in water sports—where they also secured a Bronze Medal in the K1 Kayaking event at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games. The Governing Council of the Association of Football, headed by Mr. Manoranjan Bhakta, the then Member of Parliament, also played a pivotal role in promoting football at both the national and international levels. Recognizing this sporting potential, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) first included the Andaman & Nicobar contingent in the National Games in 1994 on a partial basis. A landmark moment followed in 1996, when a full-fledged State Olympic body was established in the islands. This initiative was led by Mr. V. A. Shiyad, who took the pioneering step at the young age of 21.

The inaugural Executive Council of the Andaman & Nicobar State Olympic Association (ANSOA) was formed with Mr. Beant Singh, the then Director of Education, elected as the first President, and Mr. V. A. Shiyad as the Secretary General. After fulfilling all statutory requirements and compliances laid down by the IOA, the Andaman & Nicobar State Olympic Association was granted full affiliation as a Union Territory unit of the Indian Olympic Association in 2004. This achievement was made possible through the dedicated efforts and hard work of Mr. Abdul Razak, Mrs. K. P. Nazira, and Late P. N. Shibu Kumar, whose commitment ensured that all formalities were successfully completed. Their teamwork was further supported by Commander Paul James, the then Director of Shipping; Dr. (Mrs.) Laly Joseph, then Lecturer of Physical Education, JNRM; Mr. M. A. Manoharan; Late D. Satyarajan, Headmaster of a Government School and then Secretary of the Volleyball Association; Dr. Krishnankutty; and Late Raghunath. Together, these stalwarts contributed significantly to strengthening the State Olympic Association in alignment with IOA compliance. Since then, the Association has been actively conducting State Games once every two years, celebrating Olympic Day, and organizing District Games annually. The island contingent regularly participates in the National Games under the aegis of the IOA. Athletes from the islands have brought laurels by winning medals at the National Games, particularly in Cycling, Canoeing & Kayaking, and Rowing. On several occasions, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands have even surpassed Delhi State in the overall medal tally, marking a proud achievement for this Union Territory. During these periods, island athletes such as Mr. Eshow Alben, Mr. David Bekhame, and Ms. Deborah Herald distinguished themselves through their achievements at the National Games, Asian Games, and international competitions, bringing recognition and pride to the Union Territory.
